Our Favourite Boutique Hotel in Athens, 18 Micon St., Just Got Hipper (read on…)

18 Micon Str, the essential boutique hotel in Athens, has emerged a year after its opening as the hands-down favorite for plugged-in visitors to the Greek capital and as the first (and to date only) hotel in Athens to become a member of Hip Hotels. The hotel’s easygoing, industrial chic vibe and prized location in Psirri, one of the buzziest neighborhoods in the Greek capital—yet within walking distance of the Acropolis—made it a natural fit for the pioneering Hip Hotels association.

A trio of construction elements—cement, brick and wood—blends harmoniously to give the guestrooms and public spaces at 18 Micon Str. an airy, chill and resolutely contemporary vibe that reflects the urban surroundings of the Psirri neighborhood: gritty, splashed out with thrilling street art and unselfconsciously cool. No two rooms and suites are alike, but each is outfitted with a meticulously designed bathroom, sturdy, locally handcrafted furniture, comfortable bed and see-through mini-bar. Some feature indulgent balconies with views of the Acropolis.

The building that houses the hotel started its life in the 1950s as the warehouse of an Athenian tool trader. A religious icon of Agia Paraskevi, uncovered during the site’s initial excavation, is today discreetly displayed at the building’s entrance—an understated flash of local flavor in a district already bursting with the kind of character that is hip in any language.

Take a plunge into Psirri…

Guests at 18 Micon Str. will enjoy a lavish buffet breakfast served in the clubby but brightly-lit lobby. At any time they can reach into an “honor fridge” where they will find gourmet Greek treats such as organic iced tea from Jukeros and mini-frozen Greek yogurts from Kayak, Greece’s esteemed purveyor of “Pure Magic” ice cream. Care to linger? Close the gap between check-out and a late flight with a turn in the hotel’s groundbreaking downstairs Decompression Lounge, where hotel guests can rest, leave their luggage to explore the area and even take a refreshing shower before heading to Piraeus for an island ferry or out to Athens International Airport.

More than any other hotel in downtown Athens and now into its second year, 18 Micon Str. captures the soul of modern Athens: captivating, cozy and creative. A stay of any duration promises to be a memorable experience of Athenian Hospitality Redesigned.
